Pace Car/Bicyclists, Bike Escorts, Sweep Vehicles/bicyclists (Half Marathon, Relay, 5K) High Priority

You must be 16 or older to volunteer for this task.

October 14, 2018

Details

The pace vehicle driver or pace bicyclists serve an important role to lead the race. They proceed out in front of the leader of the race and serve to both help direct the leader around the course and they help to clear the course of vehicles and pedestrians. Volunteers, pedestrians and vehicles often see the pace car or pace bicyclists well before they see the leading runners. This gives them warning to clear the course.

Besides pacing the race out in front, we also need bicyclists or a sweep vehicle to "sweep" the course trailing behind the last runner. This helps course volunteers, police and traffic control know when the last runner has passed, allowing them to start cleaning up. The sweepers can also alert emergency personnel when runners appear to need medical attention.

In addition to the lead pacers and sweepers, we need several individuals to ride beside the runners at various places along the course. Doing so helps to direct the runners and also helps keep back pedestrians from creeping out into the road.

Volunteers for this task should be experience bicyclists or drivers. A helmet is highly recommended for all bicyclists volunteering in this race, even the last sweeper bicyclists.
Bicyclists can ride the entire course or ride just a certain section or sections of the course.

Note: The race course includes several challenging hills.

Please commit to working all of your assigned hours. The smooth operation of our race areas depends largely on our volunteers and we appreciate your commitment.
