Funds raised through this event help the Autism Society of Central Virginia (ASCV) fulfill their mission to support, empower, and build connections to improve the lives of all in our local autism community. For over 40 years, the ASCV has been proud to serve as one of the region’s premier sources of education, advocacy, services, and support for individuals with autism, their families, and professionals. We offer a wide variety of programs, including social and recreational activities, information & referral services, support groups, educational workshops, advocacy initiatives, and scholarships. Your support allows the ASCV to continue providing these critical programs to autistic individuals and their families.
About Me & My Story
For those who know me, they understand the significant impact Zach had on my life. But for those who are unfamiliar with me or this story, I am eager to share it with you. It was the year 2011, and I was a college student at VCU. As I strolled through the common area, my attention was drawn to a flyer on a bulletin board. The flyer was from someone seeking a caregiver for their 8-year-old son with autism. Instantly, I knew this was an opportunity I wanted to pursue. I made a call that same day, met with Amy (Zach's mom) promptly, and began working with the family shortly after. It didn't take long for Zach to capture my heart completely. His warm hugs, infectious giggle, and ability to show me the beauty in life's simple pleasures were truly remarkable. Over the years, I formed a close bond with Zach and quickly became a part of his family. Some of my most treasured memories with Zach include our Chipotle dates, visits to the park, sunny days at the pool (he adored the water slide), trips to Kroger to select his favorite snacks, playing games on the iPad, and many more special moments. My time with Zach is filled with countless unforgettable memories, although I wish I had more of them. Sadly, Zach passed away unexpectedly in February 2016. His impact on me and my heart is enduring, and I am grateful for the privilege of being a part of his life. I am a big runner and often think of him when I am pushing myself to meet a goal. I am so excited to dedicate these miles to him, as well as raise money for an amazing organization. I have no doubt that Zach would love to be a part of the Family Fun Day, so I would love to help ensure that families in our community can continue to enjoy things such as the ASCV 5K & Family Fun Day and so many other events.
