- Entries are not transferable or refundable.
- USAT rules apply. Unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification. We have professional USAT officials who will be monitoring all aspects of the race, so please know these rules and follow them.
- No escorts, pacers, or personal aid stations. Water and SWORD will be available on the run courses.
- No alcohol, drugs, or stimulants before or during the race.
- Athletes only in transition area. You must have body-marking and your bike number affixed to your bike before you can enter transition. You should also have your timing chip.
- We cannot be responsible for lost articles.
- You will have assigned racks in the transition area, so please put your bike on the correct rack. Numbers will be attached to the end of each row of racks to select the correct one before you set up. If you rack at the wrong location, volunteers will ask you to move to the correct rack. Please conserve rack space so that later arrivals will have room to set up.
- Since the bike starts from one end, and the run starts from the other end, there are no “best” spots in the transition area.
- Relay teams – The first member (swimmer) of a relay team must remove the chip strap and give it to the next member of the team inside the transition area. There will be a relay chip exchange location just inside of the transition area in the grass island under the trees. Chip straps must be worn around the ankle. The biker will then go to their bike location on the rack and retrieve their bike. On return, the cyclist must place the bike back on the rack before transferring the chip strap to the runner in the same exchange zone.
- Absolutely no glass in transition area.
LEGS OF EACH EVENT:
Swim (400 meters):
- No glass in pool area.
- Port-a-potties will be available near transition, and restrooms will be available in Spindletop’s “barn” and their locker rooms.
- Athletes should begin lining up no later than 7:20 a.m. in the order of seeding (race number). You will be directed by volunteers.
- ALL entries into the water will be slide entry — jumping or diving is an automatic disqualification!
- Swimmers enter the water at 15 second intervals. As soon as the swimmer in front of you pushes off the wall, you will be directed to enter the pool, feet first. Wait for the signal from the starter to begin swimming.
- If the swimmer seeded in front of you hasn’t shown up, you will be asked to wait an “extra” 15 seconds so you start at your assigned time.
- Swimmers will swim down and back in each lane, always staying to the left in the direction they are swimming. Upon returning to the start end of the pool, swim under the lane line to enter the next lane until you’ve completed all eight. Flip turns are optional.
- When needing to pass, touch the swimmer ahead on the toes, then pass on the right toward the middle of the lane, or pass at the wall. Swimmers being passed should stay as far left as possible. You are responsible to watch for other swimmers and avoid collisions.
- Wet suits, fins, artificial propulsion or flotation devices are not allowed. Swimmers may touch the lane lines, but using a lane line to propel the body forward is grounds for immediate disqualification.
- As you exit the pool, WALK across the deck, and then follow the signs back to the transition area. You can run or jog once you have exited the pool deck.
- Since this is a pool swim, swim caps are suggested but not required. You will receive a swim cap at packet pick up if you are doing the triathlon.
Bike (12.6 miles):
- No riding in the transition area. Bikes must be pushed in and out of the area to and from the mount/dismount line.
- Athletes must be 15 years or older to compete in the bike portion of the race.
- Helmet must be strapped on prior to pushing your bike out of transition. Riding without a helmet, either before, during or after the event, is an immediate disqualification.
- The course will be well-marked, and police will be controlling traffic at major intersections. Volunteers will also assist in directing you. However, you are responsible for knowing the course. Detailed maps will be available at packet pick-up. There could be light traffic along the route. You are also responsible for avoiding any debris or pavement irregularities.
- No drafting (riding within 3 bike lengths behind another athlete except while passing). Officials on motorcycles will be monitoring the race and may assign time penalties for violators.
- Ride to the right side of the road at all times except when passing. Always pass on the left. You should never cross the yellow line (middle of the road) to pass.
- Although traffic will be light, and athletes will be given the right-of-way at major intersections, there will still be active traffic on the course. Please obey traffic rules and use common sense.
- No headphones while biking.
- You are responsible for any mechanical problems on the course. Accepting aid from others results in disqualification.
- Aqua-bike time stops upon crossing the timing mat on re-entry into the transition area after the bike leg.
Run (3 mi.):
- Please review the run course map online or at packet pick-up.
- Please keep to the right and pass on the left.
- When running through UK AG fields between Spindletop and Iron Works, DO NOT leave the road. There is important research being conducted in these fields and disturbing them will be detrimental to this research and will likely mean we can no longer use this area for the run course. We will have a Port-a-Potty available at the 1 mi/2 mi mark, at the same location as the aid station.
- When running on Iron Works, stay to the right when running in both directions. DO NOT CROSS OVER INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE!! This will be grounds for disqualification for leaving the run course.
- Race number must be worn visibly, especially at the finish.
- No headphones while running.
- No pacing from non-participants.
Chip Timing / Finish Line:
- You must present your race number to receive a chip and strap.
- The chip and strap must be returned immediately after your finish. You will be charged a $30.00 fee for a lost or un-returned chip or band.
- Chips must be worn around the ankle during the race.
- Make sure you cross the timing mats throughout the race so that all your times will be captured.
