It’s difficult to imagine life without sight.  Each year, thousands lose the battle with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.  The UK EYE RESEARCH FUND supports work that will help us better understand and treat blinding diseases.  All proceeds from Tri For Sight go directly to the fund.  The triathlon also helps underscore our commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The UK Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has become a leader in the fight against visual impairment in the Bluegrass and beyond.  UK treats over 30,000 eye patients yearly, and is a leader in caring for those with complex or unusual problems.  Eye research efforts here have been nationally recognized.  Dr. Jayakrishna Ambati recently received the Wasserman Award from Research to Prevent Blindness for his work with complement activity and VEGF angiogenesis in macular degeneration.  UK has also been a frontrunner in developing new treatments for diabetic retinopathy and CMV retinitis.  Before an institution can receive grants for this kind of research, extensive and expensive preliminary work must be done.  Support from the UK EYE RESEARCH FUND helps bridge the gap between theory and proof.

Talented young physicians are recruited and trained to become top-notch eye care specialists and scientists, leaving a legacy of outstanding ophthalmologists for future generations.  An emphasis on research support helps insure that our best doctors will continue to live and work in Kentucky.
