A “Gold Star Family” is defined as a military family who has suffered the loss of a loved one due to the service member being Killed in Action (KIA) while engaged in combat with an opposing force. Gold Star Mission is an Illinois based nonprofit organization in good standing with the state. The organization is dedicated to honoring and supporting the Gold Star Families and others within the community, thus preserving the memory of our Fallen Heroes through service to people in need. Gold Star Mission was established in 2017 in Springfield, Illinois, after several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the Gold Star Families, acted. We began by honoring the service and the memory of the 34 Fallen Heroes of the Illinois National Guard since September 11th, 2001, several of whom served with members of Gold Star Mission. It was our hope, as we grow, our efforts will preserve the memory of ALL service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
At the core of our mission is ensuring the memory and the legacy of these Fallen Heroes live on through Gold Star Mission Run for the Fallen, Gold Star 500 (500 mile bicycle event), various volunteer actions, generous works and support throughout the year. The Gold Star Mission works to ensure higher education is a possibility for the family members of Illinois Service Members who have lost their lives in service to our country. We believe that through scholarships and generous efforts in giving back, we are thus carrying on these Heroes’ virtuous path of giving to those in need. Beginning with the 2017 award year, Gold Star Mission began awarding scholarships to individuals who exemplify selfless service and honor our Fallen Heroes. The Gold Star Mission allocates funds raised through Gold Star Mission events to support the Gold Star Mission Scholarship Fund. Please help Gold Star Mission meet our goal of raising funds to award scholarships in honor all Fallen Heroes. Visit www.goldstarmission.org for more information on Gold Star Mission Scholarship Fund.
