Always Reaching for a Higher Goal

Remembering 2LT Brandon Cavanaugh

Nov 29, 1983 – April 13, 2017

Brandon had the best laugh.  It was a full hearty laugh.  The kind of laugh that brought him to tears and you couldn’t help but laugh too.

Brandon’s military story first begins with the Marines.  Brandon proudly served in the Marines from 2004-2009, obtaining the rank of Sergeant.   Brandon completed two tours to Iraq once in 2006 and again in 2007 as an electronic intelligence analyst.

Brandon met Amy while working at Olive Garden.  They dated, fell in love, and married in 2005. Brandon’s family ALWAYS came first.  They had two little girls, Brandy and Abry.  He was a devoted husband and the most loving father.

Brandon completed his first Bachelors Degree while serving a tour of duty in Iraq and later completed his Master’s degree in 2010.  He continued his studies and eventually became a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor.  Brandon enjoyed the work he did, but was always striving and working for the next achievement.

Brandon was active in his faith and church.  He was involved in jail ministry and ushering.  He was also a minister in the work of saving troubled marriages.  Brandon was known for his excellent story telling skills, his love for hiking, karaoke, craft beers, camping, grilling, motorcycles, and going to the range.  He was committed to physical fitness and enjoyed running races.

In time Brandon felt the obligation to serve his country again.  He joined the Michigan Army National Guard in order to pursue his lifelong goal of commissioning as an officer.  He excelled in everything he put his mind to.  He was committed to leading and taking care of Soldiers.  In uniform he was very motivated and driven to success.  He will always be remembered for his integrity.

On April 13, 2017 Brandon died suddenly during a training accident.  He left behind his wife of 11 yrs., two daughters, a mom and dad, brothers and sisters, and grandparents.  Now the people closest to Brandon belong to the Gold Star Family.  His wife has a Gold Star to remember the service Brandon gave to the country that he felt so strongly to serve.

Thank you to Amy for trusting GSM with sharing Brandon’s story.   Thank you to Amanda and Rob Meyers for sharing your account of the love and friendship between two families.  The Gold Star Mission and I would have never known Brandon’s name or story if you had not shared his amazing life.  The two families met when Rob and Brandon were stationed at the same base and in the same battalion.  Rob and Brandon deployed together during their two tours of duty.  The families continue to remain extremely close resulting in a >12 year friendship.

BRANDON TAUGHT EVERYONE THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO HAVE DREAMS. WE CAN HAVE GOALS. WE CAN WORK HARD AND ACHIEVE THEM.

Always Remember! Never Forget!
